About

MCAD vs3370, Creating 3D Virtual Experiences, is a class that explores 3D world creation in a modern game engine.

We will explore a history of 3D gaming, the development of 3D editing, and take a look at the present and future of 3D gaming and 3D environments. This game will focus on the game world, objects in the game world, and all of the important topics surrounding the creation of these environments.

We will be using Unreal Tournament 2004 for this class, which is built on Unreal Engine 2.0, and ships with most of what you need to start editing. This engine is not at the bleeding edge (it is, after all, 2007 at this point) but is modern in many ways, and is the best tool I’ve found to teach the important topics and skills needed to become a level editing wizard.

For this class, you will need to purchase two items:

  1. a game: Unreal Tournament 2004 Eitor’s Choice Edition PC (purchase at Newegg $12.99). Please order this version for PC only - it includes the game, instructional videos, and a bunch of extra content that we can use for this class. There is a Mac version of UT2004, but it does not included level editing tools, so you won’t be able to create any content with a Mac.
  2. a book: Mastering Unreal Technology: The Art of Level Design (purchase at Amazon $32.99). Level editing is simple in theory, and tricky in practice - this book has verbose step-by-step tutorials to make life easy for you.

I don’t have any affiliation with Newegg or Amazon, they just happened to be the cheapest and easiest place to order them.
